Screenwriting 25th October 2014
Following my – more or less – positive experience in tackling a Postgraduate Certificate in Journalism at London University’s Birkbeck College I have now decided to take on another one in screenwriting. First assisgnment coming up. I have decided to use ‘The Templars’ – my story about a disillusioned priest trying to get the Pope a nuclear bomb – as the basis for the course. I reckon it could be Brendon Gleeson’s next smash hit!

Just seen the results of the Writers & Artists’ Year Book Historical Fiction Competition. I submitted an entry based upon the Irish Folk group the Dubliner’s drinking song ‘Whiskey in the Jar’. Some of you may recall that this was also a hit for Thin Lizzie back in 1970 something.
I was unsuccessful – which was disappointing – but upon comparing my entry with the winning one – ‘Scirocco Winds’, disappointment has turned to – well, I must say I feel a bit miffed.

Disappointed not to make the Euroscript shortlist but am enthusiatsic about my forthcoming entry in the Bridport Novel prize.
I have decided to develop an old idea of mine entitled ‘The Templars’ – an Irish Traveller, tormented by what he sees as racial and religious bigotry, plots to give the Pope a Nuclear weapon.

One of the problems I often encounter when writing for military or ex-military people is that their stories involve issues relating to National Security and the manuscript needs to be vetted by the relevant authorities.
We are a secretive nation but also delight in spilling beans and the conflict between the two desires can be difficult – remember Spycatcher!
Anyway, we have just such an issue with my latest project, but hopefully it can be overcome and we can move on to develop what I think will be an absolutely cracking read.

Read more…New Ghost Writing Project 21st April 2014
I do not want to say too much at this stage but I may shortly become involved in a potentially very exciting ghost writing project which will be examining the Northern Ireland conflict.
As I have already mentioned I have an idea for a feature film about this tragic episode in our recent history which has been circulated to some agencies and this would be an ideal adjunct.
